- The National Center for Education Research of the Institute of Education Sciences of the US Department of Education have just released the following Practice Guides made available by the What Works Clearinghouse:
- Organizing Instruction and Study to Improve Student Learning
- "The guide draws on the best available evidence and expertise to provide teachers with specific strategies for organizing instruction and students' studying of material to facilitate learning and remembering, and for helping students use what they have learned in new situations. The guide includes a set of concrete actions relating to the use of instructional and study time that are applicable to subjects that demand a great deal of content learning, including social studies, science, and mathematics. Along with seven recommendations for teachers, the panel also indicates the quality of evidence that supports each recommendation." IES What Works Clearinghouse
- Encouraging Girls in Math and Science
- This guide is designed to formulate specific and coherent evidence-based recommendations that educators can use to encourage girls in the fields of math and science. The guide includes specific recommendations and the quality of evidence that supports those recommendations.

- 2006 PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) study: PISA assesses how far students in 57 countries near the end of compulsory education
have acquired some of the knowledge and skills that are essential for
full participation in society. The STEM-related domains of
reading, mathematical and scientific literacy, and problem solving are covered not merely in
terms of mastery of the school curriculum, but in terms of important
knowledge and skills needed in adult life.
- What Works Clearinghouse: A Department of Education online resource that provides educators, policymakers, researchers and the general public with access to research findings on the effectiveness of particular educational programs and practices.
- Doing What Works: Similarly sponsored by the Department of Education, this online resource aims to help educators and administrators put into practice research-based educational techniques, directly addressing policy-to-practice implementation challenges.
- Academic Competitiveness Council report: This document details the conclusions of the ACC, which was charged with identifying, evaluating, and offering recommendations to improve the effectiveness of all federal programs with a science or mathematics education focus.
