Florida’s NAEP Science Student Achievement by FRL and Level, Grade 4
In 2005, the percentage of fourth grade students in Florida on free and reduced lunch scored lower at Basic, Proficient, and Advanced levels compared to non-FRL students on NAEP* Science. In 2005, 64 percent of students not on FRL scored at the Basic level compared to 36 percent on FRL, a difference of 28 percentage points. The percent of fourth graders on FRL that scored at the Proficient level (12%) were also 18 percentage points lower than then the 30 percent of students not on Free and Reduced Lunch. This trend is also evident at the Advanced level of achievement.
*NAEP 2005 science achievement was scored on a scale of 0 to 300 for fourth graders. Students scoring 137 and lower were considered achieving below basic understanding in science, 138-169 had Basic level of achievement, those scoring 170-204 were Proficient, and Advanced students scored 205 or greater.
