Florida’s NAEP Science Student Achievement by Gender and Level, Grade 8
In Florida, the percentage of eighth grade males scoring at Basic, Proficient, and Advanced levels were higher than females by two to five percentage points. In 2005, 52 percent of males had Basic achievement in science, 24 percent were Proficient, and 3 percent were Advanced in NAEP* science. The percent of females scoring at these levels was 49, 19, and 1, respectively.
*NAEP 2005 science achievement was scored on a scale of 0 to 300 for eighth graders. Students scoring 142 and lower were considered achieving below basic understanding in science, 143-169 had Basic level of achievement, those scoring 170-207 were Proficient, and Advanced students scored 208 or greater.
