Florida’s NAEP Science Student Achievement by FRL and Level, Grade 8
In 2005, the percentage of eighth grade students in Florida not on free and reduced lunch was higher at Basic, Proficient, and Advanced levels compared to FRL students on NAEP* science. In 2005, 54 percent of students on FRL scored at the Basic level compared to 83 percent not on FRL, a difference of 29 percentage points. The percent of eighth graders on FRL that scored at the Proficient level (13%) were also 26 percentage points lower than then the 39 percent of students not on Free and reduced lunch. In 2005, a greater percentage of students not on FRL scored at the Advanced level on NAEP science by two percentage points compared to those on FRL.
*NAEP 2005 science achievement was scored on a scale of 0 to 300 for eighth graders. Students scoring 142 and lower were considered achieving below basic understanding in science, 143-169 had Basic level of achievement, those scoring 170-207 were Proficient, and Advanced students scored 208 or greater.
