
NAEP Mathematics Student Achievement at Proficient Level by Gender, Grade 8
Eighth grade males and females in Florida scored lower than national averages in NAEP* mathematics. In 2007, U.S. males scored higher than Florida males by four percent, while U.S. females performed higher than Florida females by three percent. Nevertheless, Florida males performing at the Proficient level increased by three percentage points from 2003 to 2007 and females increased by four percentage points, while their U.S. counterparts increased by four and three percent, respectively.
*NAEP mathematics achievement was scored on a scale of 0 to 300 for eighth graders. Students scoring 261 and lower were considered achieving below basic understanding in science, 262-298 had Basic level of achievement, those scoring 299-332 were Proficient, and Advanced students scored 333 or greater.
