Florida’s eighth grade Limited English Proficient students on par with national LEP averages on NAEP Mathematics

NAEP Mathematics Student Achievement by LEP (U.S. versus FL), Grade 8

Eighth grade Limited English Proficient (LEP) students score equally well with their national counterparts in NAEP* mathematics. However, Florida LEP students scoring at the Proficient level have increased by four percentage points, while their national counterparts increased by one percentage point. Nevertheless, from 2003 to 2007 non-LEP students both in Florida and the U.S. outscored LEP students.

*NAEP mathematics achievement was scored on a scale of 0 to 300 for eighth graders. Students scoring 261 and lower were considered achieving below basic understanding in science, 262-298 had Basic level of achievement, those scoring 299-332 were Proficient, and Advanced students scored 333 or greater.
