Florida’s eighth graders improve in NAEP Mathematics


NAEP Mathematics Student Achievement at Proficient Level by Race and Ethnicity (U.S. versus FL), Grade 8

Eighth grade Florida students improved at the Proficient level on NAEP* mathematics from 2003 to 2007, regardless of race and ethnicity. Specifically, White students in Florida improved by 3 percentage points, Black students increased by 4 percentage points, and Hispanic students increased by 5 percentage points. This was similar to the national average increases among racial and ethnic groups of 5, 4, and 4, respectively.

*NAEP mathematics achievement was scored on a scale of 0 to 300 for eighth graders. Students scoring 261 and lower were considered achieving below basic understanding in science, 262-298 had Basic level of achievement, those scoring 299-332 were Proficient, and Advanced students scored 333 or greater.
